Soccer: Northern Stars U19 gain revenge, claim Hurricane Cup tournament

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Northern Stars U19 avenged a loss to Sheboygan Lakeshore and captured the Hurricane Cup boys soccer tournament.

Stars started the tournament with a 1-0 win over Wausau. The only goal came from Michael Halley, scoring from an assist by Jurgen Kleiman about 20 minutes into the game.

In the second game, a first-half penalty kick lifted Lakeshore past the Stars 1-0.

“Goalkeeper Caleb Bryant made several outstanding saves in the second half to keep the deficit at one goal,” said Stars coach Greg Kulas.

In the final pool play game, Stars edged Wisconsin Rapids 3-2 to advance to the championship game.

Ben Backlund, Jurgen Kleiman and David Brule scored goals for the Stars. Backlund, Kleiman and Michael Halley each provided assists.

In the championship game, Stars and Lakeshore battled to a scoreless first half.

About 10 minutes into the second half, Backlund fired a shot off the goalkeeper and then buried a rebound shot in the back right corner of the net to give the Stars the lead.

Coach Kulas cited the defense of Ryan Hakamaki, Chandler Goffart, Caleb Plumley and Michael Kulas, along with several strong saves from keeper Bryant for “preserving the lead and earning the Stars the tournament championship.”
