KINGSFORD — The Escanaba Major Boys’ Little League All-Stars (age 11-12) created a few scoring opportunities here Wednesday night.

That alone wasn’t enough, however, as Kingsford eliminated Esky 5-1 from the District 10 baseball tournament.

The victory enables Kingsford to host Iron Mountain North in tonight’s championship game at 6 p.m. CDT. Another contest, if necessary, takes place at 6 p.m. Friday.

Cannon Arnt, who led off the sixth inning with an infield single, scored Esky’s run on a fielder’s choice during a contest which lasted slightly more than an hour.

Esky had baserunners on the corners with one out in the second, but was unable to capitalize, then stranded runners on second and third in the fourth.

“We had too many groundballs,” said Esky manager Jeremy Peacock. “We couldn’t seem to get the ball out of the infield. We couldn’t get them around.”

Gavin Trevillian and Dakota Woodward combined on a three-hitter and six strikeouts and allowed just one walk for Kingsford.

“It was a good game,” said Kingsford manager Dan Brown. “Escanaba has a nice little team. They played well tonight. They also have a young team. They’re going to be good next year.”

Trevillian opened the scoring on a passed ball in the first. Jack Kriegl scored Kingsford’s second run on Nolan Hendrickson’s groundout to second in the following frame and Andres Finley made it 3-0 on Kriegl’s grounder to the pitcher in the fourth.

Kingsford added a pair of runs in the fifth on a double to left field by Trevillian and single to left by Finley, a third baseman who was in on six put-outs.

“He (Finley) was like a vacuum cleaner tonight,” said Brown. “He played a great game. Most of those were hard-hit balls. He definitely saved us a run or two.”

Esky’s Ashton Rymkos threw just 68 pitches, but took the complete game loss. He fanned three, walked one, hit a batter and allowed six hits.

“Ashton pitched well,” said Peacock. “That’s why we stuck with him. They’re a good hitting team and they played us tough. They were enjoyable to play against. All the boys on their team are good sports. We’re loaded with 11-year-olds. We’ll be back.”

Trevillian finished with a pair of doubles. Esky’s Nolan Bink and Brandon Gardner tomahawked singles to left in the fourth.
