Bobcats roll to 5-0

Ron Deuter/The Daily News Florence’s Kaden Schuls navigates the field against Gillett during the first quarter Friday night as Toby Wheeler (45) looks to provide a block.

FLORENCE, Wis. – Kaden Schuls burned Gillett for 207 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns as the Florence Bobcats pounded the Tigers 52-6 in eight-player conference football Friday night at Robert Landry Field.

Schuls’ night also included two interceptions, as the Bobcats built a 30-6 halftime lead. Toby Wheeler added two more scores for Florence, totaling 61 yards on nine trips. Andrew Hirn chipped in 44 yards on six touches, including the game’s final touchdown, which resulted a huge celebration for reasons bigger than football.

Hirn’s mother, who is

battling a brain tumor, was in attendance at the game to see the score. The Bobcats players decided to recognize her, bringing her and other parents on the field as the game ended.

“They gave her the game ball,” Bobcats head coach Kent Walstrom said. “It was a nice moment. She’s been really brave, fighting hard, undergoing operations. Just battling. It was a pretty special thing.”

Walstrom said the Bobcats were not as sharp to start the game and had two TDs called back due to penalties.

“I think these kids might have had more on their minds than just the game,” he said in another reference to Hirn’s mother.

Wheeler, who completed 4-of-7 passes for 51 yards, led the Bobcats defense with 17 tackles. Matthew Johnson and Kobe Hodgson each added 10 stops. William Liebergen had seven tackles.

The Bobcats (5-0) have outscored opponents 264-20 thus far on the season. But strong Laona-Wabeno and Suring teams are up next on the schedule, beginning with Laona-Wabeno next Friday at Wabeno.

Suring and Laona/Wabeno squared off Friday night, with both teams showing a 3-1 record entering play.

“We have to beat them both,” Walstrom said. “We need to finish out strong.”
