KINGSFORD — The Iron Mountain Mountaineers crossed Woodward Avenue on Monday to take on the Flivvers of Kingsford in non-conference girls tennis action at the Kingsford High School tennis facility. The Twin City Rivalry ended in a 4-4 match split.

The Mountaineers’ Callie Bianco and Megan Murray battled the Flivvers No. 1 doubles team of Anna Murvich and Bailey Johnson for 2.5 hours and three sets to finally pull out a victory, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.

“It was great to see everyone being competitive but also having fun. Anna and Bailey had an excellent match, fought hard but came up short,” Kingsford head coach Tracy Rutter said, adding, “It was a fun match to watch.”

“Lizzy (Cross) and Jessica (Tomasoski) continue to excel at three and four singles” Rutter added. “Our four doubles (Jenna Olkkonen-Liz Penegor) are playing excellent. Super proud of how far they’ve come.”

“What an exciting match between Iron Mountain and Kingsford. The teams played hard and there were a lot of great points scored by players on both teams,” Iron Mountain coach Sharon Ducat said.

“Claire Mongrain remains steady at two singles, but the play of our doubles teams was much improved,” Ducat added. “Number two (Megan Garvaglia-Aziza Burgoon) and number three doubles (Danika Juul-Rediet Husing) had convincing wins, but number one doubles (Bianco-Murray) had to really work to pull out a victory. It was good to see them fight for the win.”

Kingsford travels to Westwood today for another non-conference meet, and goes to Escanaba on Thursday for Great Northern Conference action.

Iron Mountain also faces a non-conference opponent today, hosting Gladstone. Ishpeming comes to town Wednesday and Westwood on Thursday for Mid-Peninsula Conference play.
