Matt McCarthy/The Daily News Norway’s Cadeance Lindsley prepares to serve against Kingsford in Thursday’s girls volleyball action at Norway.

NORWAY -- The first set was a competitive one, back and forth, one point for the next, but the Kingsford Lady Flivvers went on to win 25-17. From there, it was all Kingsford, sweeping Norway by 25-10 and 25-7 scores in non-conference action Thursday evening.

In the second set, the Lady Flivvers were powered with a 9-0 run on the serving of Katherine Erickson. Norway couldn't get anything going offensively in the final two sets.

The third set was much of the same for the visiting Flivvers. Stretching the score to 12-2 was the serving of Maggie Strehlow. Later in the match, a six-point scoring run for the Flivvers was mainly generated by the serving of libero Brooke Kriegl.

Norway head coach Erika Harnden was optimistic, despite her team's struggles in the final two sets.

"Even though the final scores didn't show it, we did a lot of things right tonight," she said.

"Kingsford is a very strong team and I give them a lot of credit. We switched some things up tonight, and held our own in the first set.

"While having a player come out due to injury (Olivia Stanchina), we fell apart in the second set. In the third set, we switched things up even more and that didn't go so well. We are a growing team and getting stronger."

Kingsford head coach Jaclynn Kreider made some lineup changes for the non-conference match.

"Tonight, it's important for people to realize that we went with a different offense," she said. "We used it tonight after only one night of practice in it. I am very proud of my girls for playing through the adversity of such change. We communicated very well tonight, even though we started off slow in the first set, the girls got the job done."

Kreider's squad used a 5-1 formation.

"It fed off of Katherine (Erickson) and she did great tonight," Kreider said. "Lexi Roberge did a phenomenal job defensively in all three sets."

Ali Doolittle (7 kills), Strehlow (5), Hannah Strutz (4) and Maddy Holmes (4) paced the Flivvers attack. Kriegl's 8 digs led the Flivver defense. Erickson added four digs while tallying 20 assists and a pair of aces.

On Saturday, Norway heads to The Rock Invitational in Gladstone followed by Skyline Conference home games versus Rapid River on Tuesday and Stephenson on Thursday.

Kingsford travels to Menominee on Tuesday and Escanaba on Thursday for two Great Northern Conference matchups.

Kingsford also swept the JV match 25-17, 25-8, 25-20. On Tuesday, The Lady Knights JVs swept Iron Mountain 25-22, 25-23, 15-5.
