Nordics rally for 1st grid victory

STEPHENSON — For the first time since joining the ranks of eight-player competition, the North Dickinson Nordics won a road game, defeating the Stephenson Eagles at the Herbert Corey Sports Complex in come-from-behind fashion, 24-20.

“The kids and I, we feel like we won the Super Bowl. I am so happy for our boys, especially the way we came back and took the lead late in the game,” Nordics head coach Mike Christian said. “Then the way we stopped them on what would have been their game-winning drive. It was a great win for our program.”

The Nordics opened up the scoring on the night at the 8:46 mark when quarterback Brennan Donaldson hit Cameron Schultz for a 23-yard touchdown strike. The two-point conversion failed.

At the 9:05 mark in the second quarter, Stephenson got on the scoreboard with a 2-yard touchdown run. A failed two-point conversion kept the score at 6-6.

With 0:27 remaining until halftime, Donaldson again hit Schultz in the end zone, this time from 18-yards out. the two-point conversion again failed for the Nordics and they took a 12-6 lead into the half.

About six minuets into the third quarter, the Eagles tied the game at 12-12, with a quarterback draw play. The 12-12 score held up moving in to the fourth and final stanza.

North Dickinson struck in the fourth quarter when Donaldson again connected with Schultz, this time for a 63-yard touchdown at 9:30 remaining in the contest. After a failed two-point conversion, the Nordics once again took the lead at 18-12.

Stephenson converted a long pass play at the 4:50 mark to tie the game. A quarterback draw play led to a successful two-point conversion and a 20-18 lead for the Eagles.

Less than two minutes later, Schultz broke free for the Nordics for a 73-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed but the Nordics never relinquished the lead.

“Max Mattson made a heck of a play with 0:05 left and intercepted the ball, to seal the win for us” said Christian.

Offensively, the Nordics gained 341 yards on the evening, 137 rushing and Donaldson passed for 204 yards. Schultz amassed 153 receiving yards on the night.

Defensively, North Dickinson was led by Brandon Thao with 28 tackles. Tucker Mattson recovered an Eagles fumble.

The Nordics head home to welcome the North Central Jets to James D. Priest Field Thursday, Sept. 26. Stephenson heads to Ontonagon next Friday night.
