Prep tennis: KHS loses at Westwood

ISHPEMING — It was two-setters across the board for Westwood in an 8-0 girls tennis win over Kingsford.

“It was a beautiful day for tennis,” Patriots head coach Sarah Massie said. “These girls have had a lot of court time so far this week, having played Escanaba and Gladstone (on Monday). I was happy to see them come out and play with the energy that they did.

“Jenna Wealton and Madi Koski showed some mental toughness in their second sets where they both had to battle. Jenna was down 5-2 in the second set before coming back to win 7-5. I was proud of how they both responded when faced with a little adversity.”

Wealton took No. 4 singles 6-2, 7-5 over Kingsford’s Lizzy Cross, while Koski claimed No. 1 singles over Stephanie List 6-3, 7-5.

In the middle singles matches, No. 2 Tessa Leece topped Teagan Petschar 6-0, 6-1, while No. 3 Jillian Koski was victorious over Jessica Tomasoski 6-0, 6-2.

There were no problems at doubles for the Patriots, either. No. 1 Katelyn Anttila and Karlie Patron topped Bailey Johnson and Anna Murvich 6-1, 6-0, while No. 2 Meghan Johnson and Ellie Miller were victorious over Valerie Richtig and Karlee Hulkkonen 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 3, Avery Mariuzza and Emily Nelson defeated Myranda Golla and Maggie Menghini 6-4, 6-3, while No. 4 Claire Gilles and Natalie Prophet downed Liz Penegor and Jenna Olkkanen 6-1, 6-3.
