Wonders will enter NMU Hall of Fame

JULIE WONDERS

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University will induct five individuals and one team into the NMU Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, September 20. Former Wildcat women’s basketball player, Julie (Heldt) Wonders, is one of this year’s inductees.

Wonders came to Northern Michigan after two years at Lake Michigan College where she was all-conference, all-state and all-region both seasons and set single-season (649 points) and career (1,103 points) scoring records.

She came to Northern Michigan for the 1991-92 season and made an immediate impact. She helped the team reach the NCAA Division II Regionals where she earned NCAA Regional Tournament MVP honors. She was also named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second team and received the team’s Outstanding Newcomer Award and Free Throw Award.

The next season, Wonders set an NMU single-season scoring record with 715 points, averaging 25.5 points per game. She reached 30 points seven times and set a single-game scoring record with 52 points against the University of Wisconsin Parkside. The team set a school record by averaging 89.7 points per game. All of these records still stand today.

Her efforts in 1992-93 allowed her to be named the team’s Most Valuable Player as well as the GLIAC’s Player of the Year.

In her two seasons for the Wildcats, Wonders tallied 1,208 points and she still holds NMU’s career scoring average record of 21.1 points per game. She also still holds the record for most free throws in a game with 18.

She graduated from NMU in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in Health Education. She married Matt Wonders, former NMU men’s basketball standout, and her son, Carson, is a current member of the NMU men’s basketball team.

She is director of Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools.

The 2019 Hall of Fame induction takes place on Friday at the Northern Center. The event begins with a social hour at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are available through the NMU Ticket Office.
