Copper Kings win West PAC volley tournament crown
WEST ISHPEMING — On Saturday, the West PAC Conference Volleyball Tournament took place at the Westwood High School. Nine teams took part in the pool play format — Iron Mountain, West Iron County, Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, Westwood, Gwinn, Negaunee and Ishpeming.
The Calumet Lady Copper Kings defeated the Gwinn Modletowners in the finals 2-0, to be crowned 2019 conference champions.
West Iron and head coach Brenda Grubbs defeated Iron Mountain 2-0 (25-21, 25-20). The Wykons also defeated Ishpeming, while splitting with Houghton and tournament runner up Gwinn 1-1.
IM head coach Jeanne Newberry noted that the competition the Lady Mountaineers faced was strong throughout their pool. IM defeated Ishpeming 2-0 (25-19, 25-13), lost to Houghton 0-2 (23-25, 20-25), Gwinn 0-2 (17-25, 16-25) and the aforementioned two-set loss to the Lady Wykons.
Iron Mountain travels to Gwinn tonight for a conference dual, while West Iron hosts Iron County rival Forest Park in a non-conference tilt.
