Rebels sweep NLC cross country title

LAKEWOOD, Wis. — Laona-Wabeno runners swept the team championships for both boys and girls at the Northern Lakes Conference cross country meet held at McCauslin Brook Golf Course.

On the girls side of things, L\W had 34 points, followed by Three Lakes/Phelps with 40, Crandon 67 and the Florence Lady Bobcats in fourth place with 80 points. Goodman-Pembine finished fifth.

The top finisher for coach Karen Harrison’s Bobcats was senior Faith Neuens with a time of 23:46.3, good enough for ninth place. Teammate Kierra Sullivan finished 14th with a time of 25:01.3. The Volk sisters of Three Lakes/Phelps finished first and second, freshman Kallie with a 20:18.6, followed by her older sister Kortnie, a senior, with a time of 21:16.8.

The boys team results were as follows: L\W 21 points, Crandon 41 and Goodman-Pembine with 57. Top finisher for the Bobcats was their lone runner, freshman Seth Axley, who finished fourth overall with a time of 20:45.3. A mere 1.9 seconds behind Axley was Goodman-Pembine’s Kevin Strietzel with a 20:47.2, the Patriots’ top finisher.

Both Florence and Goodman-Pembine boys and girls teams compete Friday in a Division 3 Sectional at Athens. The WIAA State Championship meet will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
