Student athletes of the month named

IRON MOUNTAIN — The year’s first area male and female Hometowne Lumber Athletes of the Month for the 2019-2020 school year were selected Wednesday afternoon.

The female selections for August/September are Niagara’s Cassie Gill for volleyball, and Kingsford’s Melanie Wenzel for cross country. The male selections are Toby Wheeler of Florence and Caleb Evosevich-Hynes of Iron Mountain, both for football.

Wenzel in her first year of competing in cross country, has made an immediate impact on the cooperative Kingsford-Iron Mountain team, while becoming one of the best runners in the U.P. She finished first in both the Kingsford and Munising Larissa Varitti Invitationals, to go along with two second-place finishes through September.

Gill, a senior volleyball player for the Lady Badgers, was the team leader through the first part of the season, helping her team achieve a 6-2 M & O Conference record through the month of September. She had 117 kills, 23 blocks and 52 digs.

Wheeler, senior football player for Florence, was the quarterback in a run heavy offense, rushed for 357 yards and seven touchdowns. Passing, he was 16-25 for 339 yards and five touchdowns, good for a 64% completion rate. He also had 56 tackles, one sack and an interception return for a touchdown from the middle linebacker position, leading the Bobcats to a 5-0 record over that time frame.

Evosevich-Hynes, an Iron Mountain senior football player, was one of the many reasons for the Mountaineers’ 5-0 start. He rushed for 409 yards on 34 carries, a 12-yard per carry average and six touchdowns. He added five receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown, which is a 29 yard per catch average. He kicked 13 PAT’s, a 30-yard FG, to go with 27 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles.

Athletes of the month are automatically in the running for the Hometowne Lumber male and female Athletes of the Year, announced at the year-end banquet in early June.
