NORWAY — West Iron County captured a 25-19, 25-20, 25-12 sweep over Norway in non-conference volleyball Monday evening, with both teams decked out in pink for cancer awareness night.

West Iron County head coach Brenda Grubbs was impressed with her team’s defense.

“Our libero (Maddie Anderson), she plays like that all the time,” she said. “Once her confidence builds up on a given night, that’s what we see out of her.”

During the second set there was a rally that went on for nearly 45 seconds. Back and forth the ball went, each team with players diving to the floor, body or knees first. Anderson of the Wykons aggressively dove to the floor to keep the rally going, and the point was eventually won by the Wykons.

There was another rally in the final set, a point also won by WIC on what was an impressive dig by Courtney Reitmeyer. The crowd erupted, with both teams’ fans cheering the effort.

West Iron’s McKenna Kegley’s serving kept the Wykons in the lead in all three sets. Right at the point where the Knights would get the score close, she’d lead another Wykons scoring run. She had two different four-point runs, and a five-point run in the middle of the first set. Mya Grubbs also served well for the Wykons.

“We came out strong in the first set, with a lot of good things going for us” said Norway coach Erika Harnden. “The tempo of the second set got away from us, and we committed too many errors in the final set.”

Norway heads to Carney-Nadeau for a Skyline Conference match tonight, before returning home Tuesday, Oct. 29, for their last home match of the season against Munising.

West Iron looks to avenge a 3-2 loss at Crystal Falls on Oct. 1, hosting the Lady Trojans tonight at the Charles Greenlund Gymnasium in Iron River. The Wykons will hold Senior Night on Thursday against L’Anse to wrap up their home schedule.

Norway jayvees won 2-0 against West Iron, 25-20, 25-11.
