NORWAY — Survive and advance. That’s the motto and or goal in postseason tournament play. Monday night, in MHSAA Division 3 girls volleyball District 66 action, it was Bark River Harris advancing, defeating Norway 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-12) to move on to Wednesday’s semifinal round.

The first half of set No. 1 was highly competitive. The Norway student section was loud and energetic. The Lady Knights seemed to feed off the energy, keeping the score close until Tressa Ives of BR-H turn came up in the serving rotation. It was a one- or two-point differential until Ives’ serving keyed the Broncos to a 17-11 lead and they never looked back, closing out the set.

The second frame went back and forth, almost point for point, nearly all the way through. Several tie scores, led to many cheers and noise from the crowd.

“We tend to come out flat in the second set, plus we made some mistakes that we don’t typically make, and Norway played very scrappy in that set, it definitely kept us reeling,” said Broncos head coach Jen Ives.

In the end however, the Knights’ push wasn’t enough and BR-H prevailed.

The final set saw Norway start out very strong behind the serving of sophomore Alexis Paris, getting the Knights out to a 7-0 lead. It got the home crowd back into the match, and it sparked head coach Erika Harnden’s Lady Knights, but only for a brief time.

Before long, BR-H narrowed the Norway lead to 8-6, behind strong rallies and efficient serving of Selena Britton. BR-H went on to win the set and the match, to continue on in the district tournament.

Coach Ives noted her servers uncharacteristically gave away points at the beginning of the night but regrouped to finish a very successful match.

“Cara (Zawacki) served really well, as did Tressa (Ives), and Selena (Britton), it was key to us winning tonight,” Ives said.

On Wednesday, BR-H will travel to Gwinn for the semifinal round of the district. The winner of that match, will move on to host the district final match on Thursday, Nov. 7, versus the winner of Ishpeming at Manistique.
