Kingsford opens season at Wabeno

WABENO, Wis — Kingsford began its wrestling season Saturday at the Wabeno Invitational. finishing 12th overall.

The Flivvers first scheduled match of the season at Manistique on Thursday was postponed due to weather and has not been rescheduled at this point.

“Wabeno is always a tough tournament to start the year with ranked kids from both Michigan and Wisconsin,” said Flivvers head coach Darren Groleau.

Toby Wilcox (145 pounds) came away with a third place (3-1), losing to state qualifier and state ranked Carter Brunke of Athens 5-4.

“We felt like he (Wilcox) wrestled a great match, he was just one move away from winning that match … 145 was probably going to be one of the tougher weight classes in the tournament with three state-ranked kids from Wisconsin,” said Groleau.

Eddie Cardew went 2-2. He lost to a second-ranked heavyweight from Athens in a semifinal.

“He lost a tough match in the third and fourth place matches. We thought he had his opponent pinned at the end of the second, but we didn’t get the call,” said Groleau.

Ben Stanish came away with fifth place with three pins and a loss to state-ranked Eric Decker from Tomahawk in a quarterfinal. Stanish came back with two straight pins to finish the day off.

Pierre Hurtubise had a noteable win for the Flivvers at 138. Ethan Gribble had a great comeback win at 182, scoring a last-second takedown in the third period.

“Overall we had a good day, and we did a lot of good things, but lots of room for improvement,” Groleau said.

Kingsford hosts a home meet tonight against Iron Mountain, Marquette and Escanaba.
