Knights pull away from Nordics, 61-35

FELCH — Logan Parolini netted 21 points and Kody Hendricks added 20 as Norway overcame a slow start to take down North Dickinson 61-35 Wednesday evening in a Skyline Central Conference boys basketball game at Carl F. Lemin Jr. Gymnasium.

In what was a makeup game and the season opener for both squads, originally scheduled for Monday, those in attendance saw the host Nordics jump out to a 7-0 lead two minutes into the game.

Then, with a couple transition baskets triggering the Knights, it wasn’t long before Norway led 18-10 early in the second quarter behind an 18-3 run.

“We got off to a slow start obviously,” Norway head coach Jeff Gallino said. “We didn’t do some things defensively that we should be and we need to try to clean that up.”

Norway got several transition baskets off of defensive rebounds toward the end of their surge to take a 29-17 halftime lead into the locker room.

“Offensively, when we slowed things down in the second half, I thought we did a nice job,” Gallino said. “With the mismatch advantage we had all night with Kody (Hendricks) underneath, we wanted to get the ball into him and Logan (Parolini). Kody did well offensively and our defensive effort for most of the game was good as well. I am pleased with the overall effort on the night.”

Parolini led all scorers with his 21 points. Sophomore Maximus Mattson led the Nordics with 13 points, with Cameron Schultz chipping in 12.

“We got off to a fast start, we made some good shots and had some energy in the beginning of the first quarter,” said ND head coach Chris Mattson. “Then we went into a lull offensively, and they some made stops. They started to half-court trap us, and we didn’t handle it well.”

Mattson noted the offensive spark Parolini gave Norway in the third quarter, while also noting how much better his team needs to shoot. “We shot poorly tonight, we need to clean that up for sure,” Mattson said. “I’m sure their field goal percentage was quite high compared to ours as well. We simply got beat by a better team.”

ND committed 11 turnovers to the Knights’ nine, with the Knights outrebounding the Nordics 35-24.

The Nordics (0-1, 0-1) were scheduled for a quick turnaround, but tonight’s SCC game at Carney-Nadeau was postponed.

Norway (1-0, 1-0) is off until they host Mid Peninsula Monday night for their home opener.

Norway won the JV game 65-14. Gabe Ochs scored 13 points to lead the Knights.
