New look to Northwoods Storm

FLORENCE, Wis. – There’s an entire new look to the Northwoods Storm co-op wrestling program.

The Storm will now field wrestlers from Goodman and Pembine along with Florence and Niagara. The co-op, with the addition of the two new schools, climbs from Division 3 to Division 2 in the WIAA ranks.

There’s also a new head coach in Ed Kelley, who will be assisted by Chris McLain and Steve Sigmund. Head coach Jeff Conroy and assistant Todd Broullire stepped down after last season.

Graduation trimmed standout Tristen Mascarette, a two-time state qualifier now at Concordia University, plus Josh Broullire, Dakota Wicke and Colton Armstrong.

“We do not have any returning wrestlers from last season,” said Kelley, working with eight wrestlers. “Most of them do not have any wrestling experience.”

The only wrestler with some high school experience is Kingsford transfer Brandon Wakefield.

Kelley said even though this year’s team is new to wrestling, they are working hard and learning as much as they can with a new sport.

“They know they will be taking some hard knocks at first, but with the hard work they are putting in now, they will have success down the road,” Kelley said.

Freshman Caitlyn Kelley has experience in state and national junior events, winning five Wisconsin Wrestling Federation state girls championships and some national honors. She won the WWF women’s high school championship last season as an eighth-grader.

“The WIAA currently does not have a separate girls division for the high school wrestling state championships,” Kelley noted.

Storm began the season Friday at the Oconto Invite. The first home meet will be against Menominee and Menominee Indian on Dec 16 in Florence. Roster:

JUNIOR: Gabe Wysocki.

SOPHOMORE: Matt Allred,

Brandon Wakefield.

FRESHMAN: Caitlyn Kelley,

Parker Lanczak, Andar Olson, Eddie White, Josh Wysocki.
