Wolverines edge North Central girls

POWERS — Senior guard Kennedy Englund provided the Mid Peninsula girls with clutch shooting here Tuesday night, helping them escape with a 43-42 basketball victory over the North Central Jets.

The Bay College recruit drained a pair of 3-point field goals in fourth quarter of this Skyline Central Conference match-up, including a 20-foot set shot from the left wing in the final 20 seconds which sent the Wolverines ahead to stay 43-41.

Englund, who finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds, also sank a jump shot from top of the key with less than three minutes left to play as the Wolverines gained a 38-35 lead.

“Kennedy has been struggling from the floor all year, but she’ll come around,” said Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell. “Tonight, she hit some clutch shots and really helped us on the boards.”

Camryn Croasdell finished with 10 points and Daisy Englund had eight. Bree Arsenault paced the Jets with 18 points and Neville collected 11 points and 14 boards.

The Wolverines held a 39-32 rebounding advantage and hit 16-of-60 field goals.

The Jets were 17-of-35 from the floor. Both teams committed 12 turnovers.

“It was nip and tuck all night,” said Vineent. “This game could have gone either way. I thought Alex played an excellent game. We have a lot of teams in our conference that are pretty even and every team is going to get better.”

Mid Pen (2-1), which also won the jayvee contest 29-26, hosts Republic-Michigamme Friday. The Jets (2-1) host Stephenson Tuesday.
