Area trio earn individual titles at ‘Mariucci’ invite

KINGSFORD — Shawn McGuire and Evan Haferkorn of Iron Mountain and Eddie Cardew of Kingsford all earned individual titles at Saturday’s annual Ray Mariucci Wrestling Invitational at Kingsford High School.

Marquette won the 12-team event with 194.5 points, with Kingsford (94) placing fourth and Iron Mountain (79) tying Menominee (79) for sixth.

For Iron Mountain, McGuire earned a 5-0 decision over Marquette’s Payton Holmstrom in the 112-pound final. McGuire knocked off Gladstone’s Lane Matzke in the semifinal. Haferkorn (125) won by fall over Negaunee’s Joseph McCollum in a semifinal before defeating Munising’s Reagan Bowerman by fall in the final.

IM’s Preston Roberts won two matches before wrestling to second place at 140 pounds, falling to Marquette’s Wyatt Kuhlman in the final. At 152 pounds, Brent Aman took two victories, including a second-round win over Kingsford’s Trent Maki, before losing a semifinal to Munising’s Devin Moore. Bradon Farragh notched a quarterfinal win over Kingsford’s Alaster Johnson at 171 pounds.

For the Flivvers, Cardew (285 pounds) knocked off Negaunee’s Bryce Dunstan in the semis before winning by fall over Gladstone’s Brett Boudreau in the final. Ben Stanish (215) and Toby Wilcox (145) took second place finishes. Stanish had two wins on the day and then lost to Negaunee’s Leo Helppi in a 5-0 decision in the final. Wilcox downed Marquette’s Griffin Moore in a semifinal but came up short in overtime to Drew Allgeyer of Bark River-Harris.

Kingsford also had Michael Hill-Scott (130) wrestle to third place, and Elliot Johnson (189) took a fourth.

The Northwood Storm co-op had four wrestlers compete. Florence’s Caitlyn Kelley (112) scored for the Storm with a fourth-place effort. She was unable to finish her third place match against Gladstone’s Lane Matzke due to injury.
