MARQUETTE – The Norway High School Co-op ski team raced to a second-place finish Tuesday at Marquette Mountain.
The Knights edged out both Ironwood and Houghton to claim second place behind Marquette High School.
Norway was led by both Jake Munn and Gabby Carey who ended the day with similar results. Munn skied to a fifth in the giant slalom and a sixth in the slalom while Carey earned a fifth in the slalom and a sixth in the giant slalom.
Brooke Bittinger finished with a 13th in both events followed closely by Maria Fornetti ending with a 14th in the GS and 16th in the slalom.
“After finishing fourth in the last two races, we knew we had the ability to move up in the results if we skied to our abilities — which we did today,” said assistant coach Ted Fornetti. “Gabby and Jake skied great but it takes four racers to earn team points and that is where Brooke and Maria both skied solid and gave us the needed points to take second in both the slalom and GS, plus a second in the overall standings.
“Peyton Johnson also had a very good day finishing ahead of racers from both Ironwood and Houghton which hurt their team scores and gave an advantage to us. Overall it was a very good day of racing for our entire team. We hope to keep up this momentum through the remainder of the season.”
Up next, Norway hosts a four-school home race at Pine Mountain Thursday afternoon.
