Flivvers lose 4-1
HANCOCK — Looking to exact a little revenge after an earlier loss to the Kingsford Flivvers hockey team, the Hancock Bulldogs used a pair of goals just 21 seconds apart to help earn a 4-1 win at the Houghton County Arena Tuesday.
The win was their fifth in their last six games.
After the Flivvers scored the game’s opening goal just 5:12 into the contest, the Bulldogs fought back quickly and were rewarded just 32 seconds later when junior winger Austin Salani knocked a rebound past Flivvers goaltender Evan Hedtke.
The goal was just what the Bulldogs needed after the Flivvers controlled the game’s first five minutes of the contest.
“Anytime you can answer a goal quick, it’s huge for a hockey team,” said Bulldogs coach Dan Rouleau. “Whenever you can answer a goal back, it’s huge for your team. They just took the momentum of the game and then we turn around, and not too long later, we get the momentum back.”
Late in the period, the Bulldogs (7-9-0 overall, 2-5-0 GLHC) struck twice 21 seconds apart. Freshman center Calvin Heinonen get things started when he picked up the puck in the corner to Hedtke’s left. He attempted to throw a pass out front to co-captain Petr Anderson, but his pass hit Hedtke’s stick and deflected into the net at 15:19.
Austin Salani then struck for the second time in the game at 15:40 when he fired a shot from the bottom of the left circle past Hedtke.
Salani picked up his third point of the night by assisting on his older brother Colton’s third period tally. Austin grabbed the puck in the right corner and made a quick pass out front on his backhand to set up Colton’s goal at 4:53.
Flivvers coach Greg Wadge was disappointed to see what had started as a positive period for Kingsford turn into a disaster quickly.
“We talked before the game about getting to a good start, and we did,” Wadge said. “Then, I think those two goals at the end of the (first) period really, really deflated us. We had a hard time coming back from that.”
Kingsford’s tally came off the stick of Colin Watkins at 5:12. Nick Saari picked up a failed clearing attempt and then moved the puck over to Watkins, who beat Pietila.
“We didn’t play the way we’re capable of playing,” said Wadge. “I thought the compete level in the third period wasn’t as good as when we started out the first.”
The Bulldogs, after killing off the game’s first two power plays, got a man advantage of their own early in the second period. They did not need the entirety of the advantage to put the Flivvers further behind.
After controlling the puck in the offensive zone with a number of short passes, Hancock crashed the slot. Sophomore defenseman Chad Nordstrom grabbed a rebound off a shot from junior winger Mason Mikesch and buried it at 4:55.
After struggling to get their offense going for much of the night, the Flivvers (8-9-0 overall, 3-6-0 GLHC) started to get some scoring chances late in the period.
But the Bulldogs added another insurance marker just 59 seconds after co-captain Colton Salani’s goal in the third. Heinonen found Petr Anderson driving the net and Anderson wasted little time lifting a shot over Hedtke.
Later in the third, the Bulldogs killed off 1:36 of a two-man advantage, by keeping the Flivvers from challenging Pietila with rebounds.
