IRON MOUNTAIN — With each team having a player record a double-double and multiple players scoring in double figures, round one of the girls basketball Twin City rivalry went to Kingsford 54-42 over Iron Mountain on Friday night.
Kate Cook’s 11 points and 11 rebounds, was the Flivvers’ double-double, while IM sophomore Anslee Runsat had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Kingsford’s Maggie Strehlow also netted 16 points.
A player from each team returned from injury. Kingsford senior point guard Brook Kriegl was back after missing four games due to a foot injury and scored 12 points to go along with five steals and six assists.
The Mountaineers’ Reagan Lundholm returned after missing two games to an elbow injury. The senior added 10 points for Iron Mountain, now 0-6 on the season.
“Maggie Strehlow is a strong and physical player. She makes things happen under the basket,” said Kingsford head coach Lisa Harry. “Kate Cook did a-lot of things well tonight, recording a double-double for us.”
Harry also noted how the Flivvers’ press eventually wore down the Mountaineers, resulting in 16 steals. She also pointed out the speed and quickness of Brooke Kriegl.
Despite the loss, IM head coach Katelynn Grenier was optimistic about her team’s overall performance, especially only dressing seven players. Junior Chloe Bianco remains out of action due to a knee injury.
“I thought that we played really well compared to our last game versus Gladstone, we resembled a totally different team,” Grenier said. “I think we did a great job on Brooke Kriegl, limiting her to six points until late in the game. Claire Mongrain did a great job on her defensively, so kudos to Claire.”
Both coaches also praised Runsat. The Flivvers, who move to 2-4 on the season, were missing two players of their own, with Ali Doolittle and Melanie Wenzel both mending injuries.
Grenier said rebounding was a key, with her team allowing Kingsford too many offensive rebounds.
Round two of the rivalry will be played on Friday, Feb 21, at Kingsford.
The Flivvers’ next game is Monday when they welcome West PAC conference foe Houghton. Kingsford heads to West Iron on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt.
In the JV game, behind 14 points from Talia Wallis and 10 points from Abby Terrian, the Flivvers defeated IM 48-23.
