Future is bright for Pine Mountain Ski Team

IRON MOUNTAIN – Pine Mountain Ski Team hosted its annual race this past weekend at Pine Mountain Resort. Nearly 100 racers from Marquette, Rhinelander and Ironwood attend the event which consisted of two runs each of slalom and giant slalom.

“The PMST skiers did well,” coach John Bittinger noted. “We have a very solid future of skiers with a large group of our racers under 12 years old. We have had consistent growth of our program over the last number of years, and our results in competitions are showing that.”

Megan Bittinger, competing in the 14 and under division, won the overall fastest U14 girl racer trophy.

“To earn the title, Megan had to ski fast and consistent in all four runs, where she won both individual events and her combined time was more than six seconds faster than the next 14U girl,” Bittinger said.

Annika Hill (10U), Brooke Bittinger (18U), Maria Fornetti (18U) and Jake Munn (18U) all finished the day taking both first and second place finishes in the two events.

Peyton Johnson (18U) took third in both the slalom and giant slalom. Arianna Fornetti (10U) and Scott Brazeau (18U) both earned a spot on the podium finishing third in one of the events.

“Along with the group that earned the podium finishes, we had many of our racers finish the best they have done,” Bittinger said. “Olivia Tusa (10U), Sophia Fornetti (12U) and Ingrid Holt (14U) all just missed the top three when they finished fourth in one of the races. All these racers are really improving. Some of our kids were lucky to get through a course last year and now they are competing for a podium spot. That is great to see.”
