GLADSTONE — Iron Mountain’s Shawn McGuire and Bradon Farragh won league titles here Saturday at the Mid Peninsula Conference wrestling championships.

The Gladstone Braves lived up to their favorite’s role, earning the Mid-Peninsula Conference wrestling title with 180 1/2 points. First-year M-PC entry Bark River-Harris was runner-up at 142, followed by Westwood, 114. Iron Mountain, with only five wrestlers competing, finished seventh.

McGuire, wrestling at 112 pounds, was 2-0 on the day with two pins. Farragh (171) also went 2-0, taking one pin and avenging en earlier season loss to Carter Guidbeck of Westwood with a 13-8 win in the finals.

“That was a nice win for Bradon, and should help him come individual districts,” IM head coach Cory Mclaren noted. “To only be able to send five wrestlers to conference is tough. Our goal now is individual districts and to stay healthy.”

Preston Roberts added a runner-up finish for IM, going 2-1 with two pins at 145 pounds.

Six Gladstone wrestlers were crowned champions on the way to the team title.

Bark River-Harris coach Joe Racicot was elated with the Broncos’ runner-up finish.

“This is the highest Bark River-Harris has finished in any type of team tournament,” he said. “With the group of kids we have anything is possible. This is our ninth year of existence. Having this meet this weekend is huge for our program. Every single kid placed third or better. The kids have really come together as a team. We’re definitely peaking at right time. This is a very exciting day for our program.”

The Mountaineers host Manistique Thursday at 5 p.m. in Iron Mountain Middle School Gym in the MHSAA Division 4 Districts. The winner faces Bark River-Harris in the finals at approximately 6:30 p.m. The overall winner moves on to MHSAA Regional 125 on Wednesday, Feb. 19, with the site and time to be determined geographically by the MHSAA.
