IM girls fall to Negaunee
IRON MOUNTAIN — Negaunee caught fire in the second half and defeated Iron Mountain 62-48 in girls basketball Thursday.
The Miners, leading just 31-27 at halftime, outscored the Mountaineers 21-8 in the third quarter of the dual Mid Peninsula/West PAC Conference game..
“I was really pleased with my team’s effort,” said IM coach Katelynn Grenier. “They played so well as a team and never gave up. I thought we handled their pressure well and attacked the basket.”
Claire Mongrain led the Mountaineers with 19 points and four steals. “She played her heart out tonight and worked hard on both ends of the court,” Grenier said. “Ellison Powell came off the bench and had seven points, which is huge for us.”
Iron Mountain’s Maddie Sardina scored nine points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. “She was all over the floor for us,” Grenier said.
Chloe Norman led Negaunee with 19 points and Alyssa Hill scored 11.
“We had too many miscues on defense, which led to too many easy baskets,” Grenier said.
The Negaunee junior varsity won 42-35.
Iron Mountain (1-15) is at home against Manistique on Monday.
