MARQUETTE — Kingsford’s boys and girls each placed fourth at the Upper Peninsula swimming finals held here Saturday.

Host Marquette was crowned team champion for both the boys and girls. Marquette’s boys finished with 344 points, followed by Sault Ste. Marie (227) and Houghton (219) and Kingsford (176). One the girls side, it was the Redettes with 377 points. St. Sault Marie (300), Houghton (157) and Kingsford (141).

“We had some really great swims and the kids tried their best, but we are not just deep enough yet,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “The girls team is in a rebuild mode and still did very well. There are seven sophomores and three freshmen with six graduating seniors, so we have a really good base to build on for the next few years.”

The Scott twins Sydney (fourth in the 100 butterfly; fifth in the 100 breaststroke) and Samantha (fourth in 100 backstroke; fourth in the 200 individual medley), along with Anna Lundholm (sixth in the 50 and 100 freestyle), all sophomores, each produced two individual top six swims. Those three also teamed with senior Kendall Johnson to add a third and a second in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

For the boys, seniors Colby Raiche was second in the fly and third in the 100 backstroke. Senior Luke Sturm swam to third in the 200 free and was second in 100 free, and senior John Lundholm placed fifth in the 50 free and third in the 100 fly. The boys also got two top-six swims in the 100 breaststroke with Junior Caleb Voss third and senior Luke Klein fifth.

“Luke really worked hard these last few weeks in prep for the finals and had an incredible swim,” Lindstrom said. “He came from last seed in the slow heat to a fifth place finish. That is incredible from a first-year swimmer and it rarely ever happens. Even though the top spots were dominated by seniors there is a solid base coming up behind them.”

The 200 freestyle relay of junior Sam Bilgreen and freshmen Zane Cahee, Kaden Matuszewski and Noah Richmond placed fifth.

Kingsford swim followed the U.P. Finals with their team awards banquet Sunday night. Those awards follow:

MOST IMPROVED: Mackenzie Gilroy; Andrew Nelson.

HIGH POINT WINNER: Sydney Scott; Colby Raiche.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: MacKenzie Gilroy; Luke Klein/Noah Richmond.

MVP: Samantha Scott; Luke Sturm.
