IRON MOUNTAIN – The Norway High School boys co-op ski team capped off a week of racing with another second place finish in a four-team event held at Pine Mountain Resort Thursday.

Marquette won the overall with 27 points followed by Norway with 77 points while Ironwood (94) and Houghton (117) finished in third and fourth.

Junior Jake Munn led the Knights with a season-best fourth place finish in the slalom and a sixth-place finish in the giant slalom.

Sophomores Gabby Carey raced to an eighth in the slalom and an 11th in the giant slalom, while Brooke Bittinger turned in her best two results of the season taking 10th place in both events.

Rounding out the team scores were Maria Fornetti with a 13th in the giant slalom and Peyton Johnson with a 20th in the slalom.

“Jake has really made a big step change in his skiing this year,” coach John Bittinger said. “He has been skiing strong, fast and consistent to this point and his results show. Add to that, our four girls that race in the boys division are really doing a great job for our team. Gabby has multiple top 10 finishes this season and now Brooke has cracked the top 10 to join her and Jake. Maria has four top 15 results and we round off the girls with Peyton’s top 20 finishes.

“Going into the season we were not expecting these type of results, but now that we have finished second overall in the U.P. in three of the five races, we don’t want to let up.”

The Knights travel to Houghton for two giant slalom races Tuesday then back home on Thursday for a pair of slalom races.

Starting at $3.50/week.
