Patriots down Badgers, 50-37
Matt McCarthy/The Daily News GOODMAN-PEMBINE’S BOONE Larison looks to get the around the defense of Niagara’s Edward Swanson during Thursday’s boys basketball game.
NIAGARA, Wis — Effective three point shooting and fluid half-court offense.
Goodman-Pembine had those two things going for them, defeating Niagara 50-37 in non-conference boys basketball here Thursday night.
Boone Larison of Goodman-Pembine and Josh Weber of the Badgers led all scorers with 15 points each. Owen Wysocki netted 12 for G-P, while freshman Edward Swanson canned 11 points for Niagara.
In the first half, the Patriots seemed to shoot the lights out compared to the Badgers. That’s because they drained seven of their nine three-pointers in the game in the first half. That was one difference that propelled Goodman-Pembine to their significant halftime lead.
“When we went into halftime with the lead that we had, part of the reason was that we only committed two turnovers in the half, that’s absolutely what we’re looking for as a team,” said G-P head coach Jeff Zerbst.
“I always tell my guys, that most games are win-able if we commit under 10 turnovers for the whole game. We came out of the locker room for the second half, way too overconfident because of the lead we had and that can happen with a young team,” said Zerbst.
Zerbst noted that this game was the Patriots’ third of the week, and they went 3-0.
“We really needed a positive week, and we had one this week. I am happy for our team,” he said. “We’re limiting our turnovers, we’re playing defense. Good win tonight.”
Niagara head coach Steve Derwinski notes that a big part of his team’s struggles this season has been what seems to be a constant shuffle in his roster. One of his starters Ty Colenso missed Thursday’s game to be at a welding competition. Derwinski also noted that he has a couple of players ineligible to play currently because of grades and one player injured.
“All things considered tonight, I don’t feel the game went as bad as it seems,” he said. “Our bench tonight was a junior and two freshmen, who had no or minimal varsity experience up to tonight.”
The Badgers did slow down their offense and get some good looks at the basket in the second half, but the shots weren’t falling through the net in either half.
“Movement on offense without the ball is something we work on and I talk about often. That’s a work in progress,” Derwinski said.
G-P (7-8) hosts Northern Lakes Conference foe Three Lakes on Tuesday night in Pembine.
Niagara (3-13) with the loss, remains home to entertain Lena in Marinette-Oconto conference action on the same night.
Behind 14 points from Bryson McVay and 10 points from Kevin Strietzel, the Patriots won the JV contest 46-26.
