CHARLEVOIX — Parker Stroud and Shawn McGuire are headed to the MHSAA state wrestling finals.

The Iron Mountain pair both claimed individual championships Saturday at the MHSAA Division 4 regional.

McGuire, a freshman wrestling at 112 pounds, improved his season record to 38-1 en route to his title. He first pinned Xavier Elkins of Manton in 2:48. In the semifinals, he pinned Kyle Corccran of Mancelona in 2:52. McGuire then earned a major decision (9-1) over Trayce Tate of Hart in the final.

McGuire is set to battle Gabe Mullens of St. Charles at the state final.

Stroud, a sophomore, will be making his second straight state appearance, after placing third last season. His path through the regional included major decisions over Devin Nader of Whitemore Prescott (11-2) and Spencer Vanderzwags (14-1). In the finals, he beat Zack Ouilette of Oscoda, 7-4.

Stroud, wrestling at 125 pounds, will face Jacob Christy of Memphis in the state final.

Evan Haferkorn, Isaac Manier, Preston Roberts, Bradon Farragh and Marcus Verette fell just short of making it to states. McLaren noted all are underclassman and should return to regionals again next season.

“All the kids wrestled well,” IM head coach Cory McLaren said. “It’ll be an exciting two weeks waiting to go down to Detroit and wrestle under the big lights.”

The state individual wrestling finals are at Ford Field March 6-7.
