Adams returns to manage Norway baseball this spring

2 min read

NORWAY -- Norway High School has re-hired a familiar face to take over as varsity baseball head coach.

Tony Adams was hired and approved by the NVAS Board of Education at their regular February meeting.

Adams, who left the program for a five-year period, had previously been the head coach for six seasons from 2009-2014. The 2009 season was when the program was brought back to life, having been idle since the mid 1960s.

In his six years at the helm, Adams led the Knights to a Division 4 regional championship and a berth in the state quarterfinals in his first year. In 2014, Norway once again returned to the quarterfinals winning the second regional with Adams in the dugout.

The Knights also won district championships in 2011-2013 during Adams' tenure.

Assisting Adams this season will be Randy VanGasse, who had been the head coach the last few seasons since Adams stepped down. Also on the coaching staff is Brian Adams and Bob Amundson III, who like VanGasse, are both volunteer assistants.

Norway is scheduled to open up the season April 8, hosting Escanaba.

The Norway-Vulcan Area School Board of Education also recently approved the following changes involving their athletic department.

-- Tanya Popp resigned as track coach

-- Cory Heigl was approved as skeet/trap coach.

-- Brian Adams approved as volunteer baseball coach.

-- Ben Leiker approved as boys/girls varsity golf coach.

-- Rae Anne Seat, girls head track coach.

-- Robert Amundson III as volunteer baseball coach.

-- Sarah Freiberg, athletic/counseling secretary; replaces Gail Cavalieri who retired.
