FLORENCE, Wis. — Florence finished second in the Northern Lakes Conference with a 12-2 record and finished 16-6 overall to earn a No. 3 seed in the WIAA Division 5 boys basketball tournament.
The Bobcats have a well-rounded scoring attack, led by senior Kaden Schuls, who averages 21.5 points per game. Fellow senior Riley Hixon also scores in double figures at 15.3 points per game.
Evan Johnson, a freshman, and Patrick Milan, a sophomore, averaged 8.7 points each.
Sophomore Preston Stoltz, at 6 feet 2 inches, is the tallest starter and averages 7.9 points per game.
“Going into postseason, we will rely heavily on our senior leadership, especially if we are fortunate enough to make a big run in the WIAA tournament,” Bomberg said. “It’s been over 20 years, in fact, I think it’s 22 years since the boys program has won a regional championship. We will not overlook anyone. Our goal is play smart, disciplined basketball and make our presence known each game with our board play and defense.”

No. 2 seed Wabeno-Laona and No. 1 seed Wausaukee are among the top threats in the region. Florence earned a season split with Northern Lakes Conference champion Wabeno-Laona, losing 71-68 on Dec. 13 in Laona, but coming back with a 67-65 win Jan. 28 at Florence.
“I really think the regular season challenged us in some ways,” Bomberg said. “We have some younger guys in key roles for us — playing some tougher teams like Crandon, Laona-Wabeno, Norway, Coleman, Forest Park; I think they challenged us. Particularly with how tough they are — and we had to grow up in those game moments. I’ve told my guys that success is a journey, not a destination, and we needed the regular season to really grow.”
A win against Niagara would send the Bobcats against the winner of Elcho-Gillett.
“It’s a new season, teams will make adjustments, and we will, too,” Bomberg said. “From a skill-set standpoint, we have a lot of unique pieces that can get us over the hump.”
