DETROIT – Iron Mountain freshman Shawn McGuire concluded his impressive season and state finals run as runner-up Saturday at Ford Field.
McGuire (112 pounds) was stopped by Hudson sophomore Bronson Marry, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in Division 4 at 112 pounds and state runner-up in 2019.
“Shawn had a great run at the state finals, just ran into a better wrestler,” said Iron Mountain coach Cory McLaren.
McGuire became just the third Mountaineer to ever place second at the state individual tournament. Bruce Romagnoli did it as a senior in 2009, and Ryan Gauthier accomplished it as a sophomore in 2010.
“The sky is the limit for Shawn,” McLaren said. “It will be fun to watch Shawn grow as a wrestler the next three years.”
McGuire finished the season with a 41-2 overall record.
Sophomore Parker Stroud (125 pounds), who qualified for states for a second straight season, wound up eighth at Ford Field, falling to Jackson Lumen Christi junior Conner Fitzpatrick, 8-4 in a medal match. Stroud also lost Saturday to Manchester senior Drew Gebhardt, who finished in third place.
“Parker is now a two time state placer which is very impressive,” McLaren said. “Parker and Shawn’s success reflects on how well our youth program has been doing over the past few years. Our youth coaches have them ready to wrestle when they get out of junior high, and that makes my job much easier as a coach. I’m proud of how well these two did this weekend and the future is bright for Iron Mountain wrestling program.”
McGuire advanced in the semifinals of the MHSAA tournament with a 13-0 major decision Friday over Payton Rogers of Hudson. In his first match, McGuire pinned Gabe Mullins of St Charles in the first period. In the quarterfinals, he won by major decision over Blake Baker of Dansville, 12-4.
Stroud won by a technical fall over Jacob Christy of Memphis 15-0, but narrowly lost in the quarterfinals to Andrew Krupp of New Lothrop. Stroud then defeated Spencer Vanderzwags of Hart by major decision, 12-2, putting him in the medal round against Gebhardt.
