The Northern Elite Predators host Laona-Wabeno this afternoon in a Parents Day game at Goodman.

Ben Laarman, head coach of the Niagara, Goodman and Pembine co-op, speaks for all coaches when expressing appreciation to the players’ parents and guardians.

“Without your support and contributions it would be impossible to run a successful program,” Laarman said in a letter. ” While there is no way to adequately express just how grateful the coaching staff and players are for everything you do, we do make a point to say ‘thank you’ before the final home game while giving the parents and guardians of seniors a little extra recognition.”

Arizona Cardinals’ Twitter site recognized Flivver great Tim Kearney on his 68th birthday. The birthday message indicated the hard-hitting linebacker led the Big Red in tackles for two seasons, and in clothesline tackles for one. A video accompanying the birthday message showed Kearney nearly decapitating a ball carrier. All legal back then …

Bob Uecker, Milwaukee Brewers colorful broadcaster, told Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel, that a manager holding up four fingers for an intentional walk is OK with him. However, “Ueck” remembers different hand signals during his career .200 batting average days in the majors.

“When I played, the manager held up three fingers for a strikeout when I was on deck,” Uecker said. “He knew what was going to happen.”

Michelle Charlier’s state championship assist record has held up for another year.

Austin Grayvold, just moments after Norway upset Iron Mountain in the Class C District 95 boys basketball final, was asked to explain just what happened Wednesday in Iron River’s Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

“A miracle,” said the Knights senior guard. “It’s all God.”

The Knights, anemic offensively in two regular season losses to the Mountaineers, mustered up 39 this time but held their county rival to 32.

“We all came together as a team,” Grayvold said. “That’s what we came here for. To get this.”

Described as a “bowling ball” by Coach Ben Leiker on his drives to the basket, Grayvold suffered a hard fall late in the first quarter and watched from the sidelines for part of the second.

That wasn’t just five guys on the court doing their jobs. Grayvold called it “energy” and senior center Nick Pearman used the term “drive.”

“Even the guys on the bench that didn’t play we’re motivating us and cheering us on,” Grayvold said. “It was a whole team effort.”

Norway and Ironwood, with Norway’s Tom Mott assisting the Red Devils, clash Monday in the regional …
