UP Sports Hall of Fame banquet Aug. 21; tickets available

HARRIS — The annual U.P. Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet scheduled for May 9 at the Island Resort and Casino in Harris has been postponed and will now be held on Friday, Aug. 21, at 5 p.m. Central time at the same location.

Tickets are $30 and must be reserved by Aug. 1.

Tickets are available for purchase from Hall of Fame Committee members Mike Caruso and Terry Duval of Iron Mountain, by calling Mike at 906-774-1918, or Terry at 906-286-1371.

The 2020 inductee class includes former Northern Michigan University women’s basketball standout Julie (Heldt) Wonders of Iron Mountain, Al Mitchell of Marquette, Jerry Racine of Ishpeming, Jennifer (Kangas) Brody of L’Anse, John Barnes originally of Escanaba, Todd Dagenais originally of Escanaba, the late Dewey Lane of Wakefield, William Mannisto of Bessemer, the late Victor Turosky of Iron River and the late Mickey Valesano of Wakefield.

The UPSHF council is still seeking two replacements, for former Mining Journal sportswriter and sports editor Craig Remsburg, who has moved to Green Bay, Wis., and for Fred DuVuono of Sault Ste. Marie, who died last year.

Anyone currently residing in the U.P interested in joining the council to fill one of those positions, should call UPSHF secretary Dennis Grall at 906-789-9005 or 906-280-3277.

In late July, the UPSHF committee will meet to select the 2021 induction class. Submissions for future nominees are due by June 1 of each year.
