Esky tennis sweeps singles, edge Flivvers, 5-3

KINGSFORD — The Escanaba girls tennis team swept singles and scraped a doubles match to avoid a hung result Thursday as the Eskymos defeated Kingsford 5-3 at the Kingsford High School tennis facility in a Great Northern Conference match.

It was No. 3 doubles where a tough three-set win from Delaney McIntyre and Leslie Purcell earned the win for the Eskymos against Kingsford’s Brooke Bittiner and Macy Holmes.

“It was a close match all the way through that could have gone either way,” said Escanaba coach Chris Ogren.

The Flivvers took control of the rest of the doubles matches, with Teagan Petschar and Lizzy Cross defeating Esky’s Erica Moore and Madi Mishica at No. 1 doubles, and the Flivvers’ Liz Penegor and Jenna Olkkonen finishing off McKenna Bullen and Lilia Hughes at No. 2.

At No. 4, Kingsford’s Paige Janousek and Ashlyn Blaskowski persevered a tight first set and cruised through the second against Sam Manninen and Anna Valiquette of Escanaba.

“No. 3 doubles played a long, hard third match set. Although it resulted in a loss, they played their hearts out,” said Kingsford head coach Tracy Rutter. “Definitely an off day for a few of the girls, they’ve had a long week with this being our third match in four days.”

The Flivvers host GNC foe Marquette on Monday.
