Kingsford earns 7-1 tennis win over Norway

NORWAY TOWNSHIP — In non-conference girls tennis action Tuesday afternoon at Marion Park, Norway hosted its first home match of the season and in also in a half dozen years, as area foe Kingsford was their opponent on the day. The Flivvers defeated Norway 7-1.

Kingsford used a different lineup than usual against the inexperienced Knights, with head coach Tracy Rutter using some JV players on the afternoon.

“Addie Rutter, Linnea Grubb and Ella Rizzo played up from JV and got their first varsity wins today. Rizzo played almost a three- hour, three- set match, she played great as did her opponent Mackenzie Gilroy,” said Rutter.

“Ashley Demay and Donna Van Holla No. 2 Singles, both played great. It was fun to watch them, they were super relaxed and had fun,” Rutter said,

“Meagan (Dooley) was off today and it showed. She continues to play well, but needs to work on a few things going forward,” Rutter added.

Norway coach Cassandra Gustafson was optimistic after the match.

“The girls improved a lot today. Kali (Stanchina) played a great game and we are all proud of her first win. Mackenzie (Gilroy) played a long, hard fought battle. It was a tough loss after three sets. Overall proud of the teams improvement and their wiliness to learn,” Gustafson said.

“Norway has a great group of girls, I hope their program continues to grow. Regardless of who played tonight, I’m proud of everyone’s efforts and their hard work during practice and the matches,” Rutter also added.

Norway hosts Ishpeming today, while Kingsford hosts Menominee on Thursday for Great Northern Conference action.
