Maroons tip Iron Mountain tennis

MENOMINEE — Menominee hosted Iron Mountain in girls tennis Monday, and after taking a little time to adjust to the play of the Mountaineers, the Maroons settled in and won every match but one for a 7-1 victory.

Menominee dominated the doubles matches, dropping just 10 of the 58 total games played with Abbie Anglehart and Meghan Francour leading the way at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bella Brown and Aziza Burgron.

“This was a great test for us leading up to Thursday’s Mid-Pens. Menominee has an excellent program, and they have a very talented group of girls this year,” said first year Iron Mountain coach Marcus Celello. “Elle Lofholm played well today, and I’m proud of the way she has played down our final stretch of the season.”

Lofholm collected Iron Mountain’s only win, taking the No. 4 singles match over Pearl Wellens 6-2, 6-0.

The Mountaineers are off until the Mid-Peninsula Conference meet on Thursday. It will be held at Negaunee and Westwood jointly.

“I think most of our matches today were simply a matter of Menominee playing phenomenally. We didn’t make too many mistakes, but Menominee’s players were on their A-game,” Cellelo added.

Brian Bell of the Marinette-Menominee Eagle Herald contributed to this story.
