Maroons top Wykons, 5-3

STAMBAUGH — In Great Northern Conference girls tennis action, West Iron hosted Menominee here Monday afternoon at the Nelson Field Tennis Courts. The Maroons defeated the Wykons 5-3.

“This was a tough match against a very good Menominee squad. They are loaded with several seniors throughout their lineup and are very athletic on the court,” said West Iron coach Joe Serbentas. “Points were tough and contested through all the matches.”

Serbentas added “We were able to break through at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles with long rallies and opportunistic shots to win big points during the matches. Livea (Mazurek) played an outstanding match with many deuce games and long rallies against one of the best singles players in the U.P., Jenna Nolde.”

At the No. 1 doubles Tori Bociek and Madison Berutti controlled the match from start to finish and put together their most complete game of the year, Serbentas noted.

West Iron is now 4-6-1 on the season and remains home to host Ironwood this afternoon. The Wykons travel to Gwinn on Thursday, with both upcoming matches being non-conference opponents.
