HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos will have momentum on their side heading into districts after beating the Forest Park Trojans 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 27-25) Thursday night in Harris.
The Broncos took the first set thanks in part to two lengthy runs. A six-point run led by Cara Zawacki took the team from eight points to 13. The other, an eight-point run helmed by Allison Richer, clinched the set for Bark River.
Carley Varoni started the second set for the Broncos with a short run that included two aces. Varoni totaled five aces for the night, leading the Broncos in that category. Forest Park’s Elaina Perry helmed the Trojans for a run of their own to tie things up at five. The Broncos mounted several more short runs through the remainder of the set to take the win.
The third set began with back and forth action that saw the Trojans and Broncos trade jabs with the Broncos holding a slight advantage until the score was 13-10. Then the Trojans started scoring. They evened it up at 13, then 14, and 15.
Enter Forest Parks’ Maddie Divine. With Divine serving, the Trojans went on a six-point run to take their first lead of the night at 15-21. The Broncos mounted a charge to tie the set at 24 thanks to a four-point run led by Richer. Despite a short serve from Richer that made the score 25-all, the Broncos took the win 27-25.
The Broncos, who also won 2-1 in junior varsity play, now turn their focus to playoffs.
Forest Park coach Bobbie Jo Anderson boiled the loss down to two main things, mistakes and a lack of game-time due to canceled matches and invitationals.
“We started off pretty slow in the first and second sets,” said Anderson. “Really, we were just beating ourselves. We weren’t making them fight.
“Unfortunately, this season has been a whole lot of practice and not a lot of games. A lot of those mistakes and rotation things you can work out through invitationals and all your games, we didn’t have that his year.”
Like Bark River, Forest Park has a first-round bye and will have a short break before playing the winner of a Monday matchup between Carney-Nadeau and Hannahville on Wednesday.
