Houghton-Hancock Copper Bowl, played since ‘53, canceled by virus

(Adam Niemi/Daily Mining Gazette) Hancock High School head football coach Ramon Sague, left, holds up the Copper Bowl trophy after the Bulldogs defeated Houghton 28-6 on Oct. 25, 2019, in Hancock.

HOUGHTON — There will be no 2020 winner of the Copper Bowl.

The annual rivalry game for the storied trophy between is canceled, both athletic directors confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, citing COVID-19.

Hancock athletic director Chris Salani said he’s trying to find a game for Friday night.

It’s the first time the rivals won’t play for the Copper Bowl since the trophy’s inception in 1953.

Hancock leads the all-time Copper Bowl rivalry with a 42-23-2 record. The Bulldogs have outscored Houghton 1,328 to 835.

Despite not playing for the Copper Bowl, both teams played earlier this season with a last-minute matchup on Sept. 25 that ended in a scoreless tie. The game came together after Hancock’s and Houghton’s opponents postponed because of COVID-19.
