‘Don Hill’ hoops tournament at Norway canceled due to pandemic

NORWAY — The 2021 Don Hill Memorial Scholarship adult basketball tournament, which was scheduled to be held Feb. 27 and 28 at Norway High School, has been canceled.

Norway High School athletic director Joe Tinti and tournament director Matt ‘Sweets” McCarthy made the decision to cancel the annual fundraising tournament, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s in the best interest of everyone involved, that this year’s tournament is canceled,” Tinti stated. “The scholarship is funded well enough that a one-year hiatus won’t hurt.”

The scholarship, which is awarded annually to a Norway boys basketball team graduating senior, is named after U.P. Sports Hall of Famer and Northern Michigan University Sports Hall of Famer Donald “Punky” Hill.

Hill guided the Knights cagers to eight straight Class C Regional appearances at NMU’s C.B. Hedgecock Fieldhouse from 1970-1977.

He was also a two-sport standout for Norway in the late 1940s and also at NMU in the early 1950s.

Hill passed away in the spring of 1978.
