Flivver grapplers defeat Westwood; fall to Marquette, Gladstone
GLADSTONE — The Gladstone wrestlers may be low on numbers this year, but that didn’t stop them from posting three victories in their quadrangular meet here Saturday.
Gladstone defeated Westwood 54-18, Kingsford 48-24 and Marquette 42-36 to improve to 4-2 this season.
“It was a good meet,” said Braves’ coach Jeff Brazeau. “This was good preparation for next weekend (Saturday’s Benzie Invitational). We’ve been talking about building up for next year. Our top and bottom weights are good, but we’re leaving five classes open. I think all the teams are down on numbers from what we’ve seen so far. The guys are doing a great job. I believe this helps their confidence.”
Austin Solis pinned Drew Peterson just 14 seconds into the 125-pound match to secure Gladstone’s triumph over Marquette.
Gladstone’s Drew Hansen (112) needed only 18 seconds to pin Hunter Brugman, tying the score at 36.
The Redmen collected four forfeits and led 36-6 after taking their last one at 171,
Gladstone claimed forfeits in the next three weight divisions, setting the stage for match-clinching pins.
The Braves took four forfeits from Kingsford and Owen Mattonen won the first contested match at 152 by pinning Michael Hill-Scott in 1:35. Drew Hansen (112), Cole Potier (189) and Brett Boudreau (285) also recorded pins.
Against Westwood, Hunter Solis (135) pinned Daven Collins in 60 seconds for an 18-0 lead, with Hansen, Potier, Peter Noblet (215) and Boudreau adding pins.
The Braves join Escanaba and Bark River-Harris in a quadrangular at Marquette Wednesday.
Marquette edged Kingsford 36-33 in its opener, then ended in a 36-36 draw with Westwood, with the Redmen getting the victory on a tie-breaker (fewer forfeits).
Westwood’s Lindsay Williams (112) forced the tie by pinning Hunter Brugman at 5:09.
“Lindsay had a nice match for us,” said Westwood coach Dan Carlson. “Daven (Collins) had a good comeback against Marquette and Spencer (Harvala) had a good match against Kingsford.
Collins (135) pinned Marquette’s Lars Anderson in 1:35 after getting pinned by Hunter Solis in his previous bout and Harvala (215) pinned Kingsford’s Elliot Johnson at 2:17.
Marquette hung on to edge Kingsford 36-33 in its opener. The Flivvers then beat Westwood 36-18 in their finale.
“We’re just trying to improve every week,” said Marquette coach Tony Gentz. “We saw some bright spots today. Brady Ketzenberger got his first win and Wyatt Kuhlman has been pretty consistent. He had a great match with Trent Maki.”
Maki, who finished 3-0, squeezed past Kuhlman 8-7 in double-overtime at 140.
“That was a great match-up,” said Kingsford coach Darren Groleau. “Both are ranked in the state. We wrestled well against Westwood. That was a good win for us. Overall, the guys wrestled well. They competed. I think it will be a good match with Iron Mountain (at home) Tuesday. We’re looking forward to seeing them for the first time this year.”
