IRON MOUNTAIN — Junior forward Hunter Fortner tallied four goals and an assist as Kingsford’s hockey team defeated Jeffers 6-3 Thursday evening at Mountain View Ice Arena.
Senior Carter Kreski ripped the net once and was credited with assists on three of Fortner’s four goals in the Great Lakes Hockey Conference game.
Kingsford lit the lamp a mere 2:32 seconds into the contest as Fortner connected on a one-timer. Less than two minutes later, senior Jack Perpich got the puck past Jets goalie Simon Rajala.
“A good overall effort again tonight,” aid Kingsford head coach Greg Wadge. “Jumping out to a quick lead is always good.”
Fortner added his second goal of the period with 12 seconds remaining.

Kingsford’s Hunter Fortner (8), who scored four goals, squares up against Milo Kangas (19) of Jeffers.
For the first nine minutes of the period, the puck stayed in the Flivvers zone. For most of the last five minutes, the puck stayed in Jeffers zone, though they were unable to get the puck past Kingsford goalie Evan Anderson.
The second period was very chippy, with both teams sending several players to the penalty box.
“We took some dumb penalties in the second,” Wadge said. “They actually made an adjustment in the second and it gave our defense trouble. We made an adjustment at the second intermission. Our third period was then better than the second.”
Fortner added his third goal early in the second period. The Jets scored three times in the second period, with the Hillstrom brothers each recording a goal, while teammate Cooper Burkman added Jeffers’ third and final goal with 29 seconds remaining.
A 4-on-4 in the middle of the fourth period saw Fortner net his fourth goal of the game. Kreski added an insurance goal for the Flivvers a few minutes later.
“We were pretty fired up for this game, we thought we’d play with them closer than what we did,” said Jeffers head coach Pat Nettell. “We had a terrible game tonight, lots of ‘Hockey 101’ mistakes. There’s no excuse for it.”
Kingsford, who improves to 2-1 (2-1 GLHC) on the season, travels to Michigan Tech University’s John Macinnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton on Monday to take on the Jets again.
“It’s real nice to get the win, before three long road trips next week,” Wadge noted. The Flivvers travel to GLHC powerhouses Calumet on Thursday night and Marquette on Feb. 20 at 11 a.m.
