MARQUETTE — Kingsford’s co-op co-ed high school swim team competed in their first meet of the season on Tuesday at Marquette, with the Flivver girls falling to Marquette, 110-68, while the boys were defeated 143-27.

Long-time head coach Jim Lindstrom remains at the helm of the swim teams.

“The girls 200 medley relay team of Samantha Scott, Adelaide McRoberts, Sydney Scott, Anna Lundholm, and Maggie Menghini was just two seconds off the team record,” Lindstrom said. “In the 200 freestyle, all swam U.P. Finals qualifying-type times in their first races of the season, with only two weeks of practice. That was nice to see.”

The girls team has 15 total members with seven of them being in their first year.

“It helps to have a freshman like Adelaide McRoberts, who is one of the best all around swimmers in the U.P., join a strong group of girls that we already had in place,” Lindstrom added. “New swimmer Chloe Fraker who has never swam before and has had only two weeks of practice scored with a fourth in the 100 backstroke and stepped up and filled in on the 400 free relay to help them finish third.”

Lindstrom stated that the new swimmers on the girls roster this year are one of the best groups the team has ever had.

“Marquette has a very good boys team they are talented and well coached, along with having large numbers,” he said. “Our boys were simply outnumbered, as we unfortunately only have eight boys this year. We were lucky, though, to get Thomas Lundholm, an accomplished swimmer from the YMCA team. We have two very promising swimmers in Pierre Hurtubise and Kyle Peterson. Both of these boys are very strong and athletic it is only a matter of time before they harness all of that power,” Lindstrom added.

The Flivvers host Manistique on Tuesday at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center in Iron Mountain.
