IRON MOUNTAIN — Allison Richer, Cara Zawacki and Alexis Burg combined for 44 points, and 10 triples, as Bark River-Harris shot past Iron Mountain 62-41 here Monday night in a non-conference girls basketball game.
Richer, a senior, scored a game-high 16 points.
The Broncos’ effective outside shooting was something that continued throughout the game. It got the visiting team out to a early 11-4 lead, causing Iron Mountain head coach Karen Ellis to call a timeout.
“Their ball movement and great shooting had us in trouble right away,” Ellis said. “The girls tried hard tonight, and played fairly well together, but this was a really good team we played.”
Bark River had great patience, ball movement and their girls moved extremely well without the basketball. It lasted throughout the game, and it’s something that the team strives for each game.
“I have been telling the girls, that we’re so much harder to guard, when all five girls get to touch the ball, and get good looks,” said Bark River-Harris head coach Matt Richer. “We had really good ball movement tonight, and we shot so well, wow.”
Another aspect to the Broncos’ success in the game was their depth, with both their defense and offense not faltering as substitutions were made.
“I think some of the girls I bring in off the bench are better defenders than some of the starters,” Richer said.
The Broncos stuck with their game plan throughout the game, and it worked to the end. The Mountaineers were getting good looks at the basket at different points of the game, but shots simply weren’t falling for them.
Senior Claire Mongrain led the Mountaineers with 12 points, while Anslee Runsat chipped in 11 points.
“Our effort was great tonight, and everyone was encouraging one another,” Ellis said. “In the second half, the girls came out of the locker room and played with enthusiasm, which I am happy about.”
Iron Mountain (3-9) remains home to host West PAC and Mid-Peninsula Conference foe Negaunee on Friday night.
Bark River-Harris improved to 11-2 on the season and travels to Skyline Central Conference powerhouse Carney-Nadeau on Wednesday night. The Wolves defeated BR-H earlier in the season in Harris.
Despite two Broncos in double figures, Iron Mountain won the JV game, 38-36. Anja Kleiman led the Mountaineers with nine points.
McKenzie Hoffmyer and Christina Bower each scored a game high 10 points for BR-H.
