Forest Park puts scare into Broncos
HARRIS — The fourth-ranked Bark River-Harris Broncos were tested here Tuesday night in a 45-40 basketball triumph over the Forest Park Trojans.
Senior forward Carter Zawacki intercepted a pass in the final 18 seconds to put the Broncos in the driver’s seat, and senior guard Zach Robinette split a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining.
“This was definitely a tough game,” said BR-H coach Marc Zawacki. “I thought we looked real tired. Hopefully, the guys can rest up and regroup.”
The victory enabled the Broncos to improve to 12-0 overall. They host Gwinn Thursday.
Forest Park, intent on controlling the pace of this physical Skyline Central Conference contest, took a 38-35 lead on a jump shot from top of the key by senior forward Tommy Showers late in the third quarter.
A jumper from top of the key by senior guard Nick Javurek tied the score at 38 with 6:50 left in the fourth frame.
Carter Zawacki split a pair of free throws to put the Broncos ahead to stay, then added a lay-in for a 41-38 with four minutes, 42 seconds remaining.
“I think we controlled the tempo for 3 1/2 quarters, but their pressure got to us a little in the end,” said Trojans’ coach Kurt Lehmann. “I thought we played a great game until the last couple minutes. We missed a layup and some free throws down the stretch. We also missed shots on some real good looks. The ball just didn’t drop. ”
Trenton Wood-Keshick finished with 19 points for the Broncos, who committed nine turnovers and hit just 5-of-13 free throws.
Showers scored 15, and Keall Emmers added 14 for the Trojans (2-7), who have dropped seven straight. They had 14 miscues.
The Trojans, who won the jayvee game 35-26, visit Carney-Nadeau Friday.
