Iron Mountain remains No. 2 in UPSSA hoops poll

Flivver boys fall to 5th; Knights receive vote

IRONWOOD — The second Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association U.P. basketball poll for the 2021 season has been tabulated.

Iron Mountain’s boys team (8-0) comes in at No. 2 in the Division 1-3 poll again this week. The Mountaineers received one first place vote and 20 poll points. Escanaba (8-0) received the other four first place votes and 24 poll points to take the first place spot for the second week in a row.

The Eskymos travel to Iron Mountain for a non-conference game on March 9, with a 6:15 p.m. Central tip-off scheduled.

Last week, Kingsford (5-3) came in the No. 4 spot, in a tie with undefeated (9-0) Bark River-Harris. This week, however, the Broncos jumped ahead of the Flivvers, who slipped to No. 5.

The Norway boys (7-2) and head coach Jeff Gallino received a fifth place vote in the Division 1-3 poll from the five- person voting panel.

The Ewen-Trout Creek boys, who defeated last week’s Division 4 No. 1 team Dollar Bay, took over the No. 1 spot in this week’s poll. Rudyard, which was No. 3 last week, is undefeated in the U.P., having only lost to Roscommon. They jumped ahead of the Blue Bolts this week.

On the girls side, last week’s No. 5 in Division 1-3 Escanaba, fell out of this rankings with two losses last week. Negaunee (7-1), whose lone loss is to undefeated Calumet, jumps into the No. 5 spot this week.

The Lady Gladiators of Ontonagon, who received votes last week, came into the poll this week at the No. 5 spot, with three wins last week. Pickford, who was No. 4 last week, received votes from the panel.

Cedarville’s girls moved up one spot from No. 5 this week.
