Knights’ comeback falls short

HARRIS — The fourth-ranked Bark River-Harris boys remained undefeated here Monday night as they held off a late comeback by the Norway Knights in a 49-42 basketball victory.

BR-H led 40-20 early in the fourth quarter of this Skyline Central Conference match-up when senior Joey Stein sank a jump shot from in front of the free throw line.

The Broncos (11-0) led 47-32 following a layup by senior Trenton Wood-Keshick with two minutes, 11 seconds left to play.

Norway (7-5) responded with an 8-0 run, shaving its deficit to 47-40 on a pair of free throws by senior Zach Seat with 53 seconds remaining.

“We’re happy with our first-half defense,” said BR-H coach Marc Zawacki. “We gave up only 12 points. Then, I think we got a little complacent. We started swatting at the ball instead of playing good defense. It’s a win. We’ll take it.”

Wood-Keshick then gave the Broncos an insurmountable nine-point cushion on a putback off a missed free throw on their next possession.

“I wish we could have had another four minutes,” said Norway coach Jeff Gallino. “We came out flat the last few games. We need to come out with a little more energy. Once we do that, we’ll be good to go.”

The Broncos led 31-12 at halftime and by as much as 38-18 in the third quarter.

“Overall, I’m happy with our defense,” Zawacki said. “Only, we need to finish stronger.”

Wood-Keshick scored 13 points. Senior Nick Javurek added 11, and Stein had 10.

Seat led the Knights with 17 points. Senior Jeffrey VanHolla hit 10.

“I thought Zach had a nice second half,” said Gallino. “I think we need to do a little better job boxing out. I thought they moved the ball around real well. We got down early, which made it tough to come back. Although, we can’t fault the effort. The guys didn’t quit.”

BR-H hosts Forest Park tonight at 7:45. Norway hosts West Iron County Friday.
