State wrestling finals to feature 31 UP grapplers

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Upper Peninsula will be sending a bevy of wrestlers downstate after the individual regionals took place over the weekend. With the top four wrestlers in each weight division getting a ticket to the finals, the U.P. will have 31 representatives in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids for the finals.

The Division’s 2 and 4 finals will take place at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, while Division’s 1 and 3 will travel to the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. Div. 1 and Div. 4 will wrestle on Saturday, while Div. 2 and 3 will grapple on Friday.

Iron Mountain has five wrestlers heading to Grand Rapids to compete on Saturday, after having success at Charlevoix in the March 27 Regionals.

Freshman Tyler Winch, (21-1) beat Hudson Decker of Onaway in the semifinals by pin in the first period. Winch then lost to Tyler Demory of Mio 4-3 in the finals.

“This is the best I have seen Tyler wrestle all year, he was aggressive in both matches,” said Iron Mountain head coach Cory McLaren.

Shawn McGuire (29-1) pinned Nolan Winsett of Manton in the first period in his first 119-pound match of the day. In the semifinals McGuire pinned Gage Tipton of Mancelona in the second period.

In the finals, McGuire won by technical fall 18-2 over North Central student Daniel Dani of the Bark River-Harris co-op team.

“Shawn is currently ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 4 at 119 pounds and is starting to peak at the right time. This will be his second trip to states after taking second place last year at 112 pounds,” McLaren said.

At 140 pounds, Evan Haferkorn (23-3) won by fall in the second period against Elijah Cunningham of Manton in his first match. In the semifinals Haferkorn pinned Dylan Crowe of Onaway in the first period.

Haferkorn lost to Gavyn Curnett of Leroy-Pine River late in the third period in the finals.

“Evan (Haferkorn) was close to going to states last year, it was nice to see him advance,” McLaren said. “He trained hard in the off season and it has paid off.”

At 145 pounds, Parker Stroud (21-0) won by technical fall, 15-0 vs Corbin Colton Manton in his first match. In the semifinals, Stroud won by decision, 6-0 over Cayden Mys of Leroy-Pine River.

In the finals Stroud pinned Anthony Ward of Oscoda in the first period. This weekend will be Stroud’s third trip to the state finals and his third regional championship.

“Parker has a way of winning those odd scramble positions. He was in a weird scramble position with Oscoda and didn’t panic. His length causes problems for his opponents,” McLaren stated.

Fulton Stroud (19-3) won by fall in his first match versus Rylan Lewis of Manton, at 152 pounds. Fulton Stroud lost his semifinals 8-4 to Kyle Fenner of Whitmore Prescott.

In the consolation semifinals he beat his Mountaineer teammate and fellow freshman Mason Kivi 3-1. In the consolation finals Fulton Stroud lost to Andrew Stevens by fall in the second period.

“You hate to see teammates run into each other in the consolation round. The winner goes to the state finals and the loser is done. Both freshmen battled hard and the match could have gone either way,” McLaren added.

In Division 3 at Grayling, Kingsford’s Toby Wilcox will be the lone Flivver grappler headed to Kalamazoo.

In the Division 4 regional at Charlevoix, seven Bark River-Harris grapplers make the cut.

Among those were North Central student Dillon Raab of BR-H, who took first at 135 pounds over Wyatt Fleet of Mancelona.

Also, North Central student Wyatt Raab beat Seth Enos of Onaway for the top spot at 171.
