Wykons stymie Lady Trojans; Superior Central grounds Jets
West Iron 45
Forest Park 39
CRYSTAL FALLS — Both teams had two players score in double figures, but it was a game-high 22 points from West Iron freshman Danica Shamion that propelled the Wykons past Forest Park 45-39 in a non-conference girls basketball game Thursday.
Gracie Peterson led the Lady Trojans with double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Lea LaChapelle chipped in 10 points for FP, as they finish their regular season at 1-13.
Tori Bociek drained three treys in the game on her way to 11 ponts for West Iron. The Wykons beat Forest Park by 23 points on Feb. 11 in Stambaugh.
“Forest Park played a great game tonight. We had to press in the second half to increase the tempo so we could score some easy buckets,” said West Iron head coach Eric Shamion. “We put some more effort on defense in the fourth quarter.”
“Our girls played a good game tonight. We were able to control the tempo offensively in the first half, and we moved the ball well,” said Forest Park head coach Kim Bjork. “Tonight was a nice feeling, considering how much we lost by to them our first game of the season.”
“Gracie did a great job finishing inside tonight and Lea handled the ball pressure. I thought with two minutes left we were in good shape only down by four, but we had few break downs defensively and the full court pressure got to us,” Bjork added.
West Iron improved to 8-7 and will travel to Houghton tonight, along with the Wykons boys, for a doubleheader that completes the regular season and West PAC Conference schedules.
The Trojans open up MHSAA Division 4 District play on Monday as they travel to Stephenson.

Cougars sting North Central
EBEN — The Superior Central Cougars girls’ basketball team (3-10) defeated the North Central Jets (4-8) 55-43 Thursday night in Eben.
The story of the game, said Jets coach Pete Schlenvogt, was the first 1:20. That’s when the team’s senior leader Andie Arsenault had her second foul.
In response, Schlenvogt pulled her out of the game.
After Arsenault went back in, but she was called for another foul with 2:11 remaining in the first.
Arsenault still put up 23 points for North Central in roughly seventeen and a half minutes of playing time.
“Superior Central played well and did some nice things,” Schlenvoght said.
Riley Johnson earned a double-double for the Cougars with 29 points and 13 rebounds.
