Wykons take Mountaineer lady cagers

STAMBAUGH — Freshman Danica Shamion led all scores with 20 points as West Iron rushed past Iron Mountain 55-34 in a West PAC Conference girls basketball game Friday night at the Charles Greenlund Memorial Gymnasium.

Jordan Shamion had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds for WIC, while teammate Livea Mazurek snared a game- high 13 rebounds.

“We started out slow on offense, but we were able to turn our solid defense into some easy points in the second quarter,” said West Iron head coach Eric Shamion. “It was a nice team win.”

Anslee Runsat led the Mountaineers with nine points, as they fell to 3-8 (1-6 West PAC, 2-4 Mid Peninsula). IM returns home to host non-conference foe Bark River-Harris on Monday.

“The girls worked hard tonight, however our post players got into foul trouble early, which really hindered our inside defense,” said Iron Mountain head coach Karen Ellis. “Our shooting wasn’t great tonight, we got a lot of looks, but they just wouldn’t drop.”

West Iron who improved to 4-6 (2–5 West PAC) with the win, hits the road for three games next week — at Norway on Tuesday, at Gwinn on Thursday and at Carney-Nadeau on March 13.

IM won the jayvee game 39-27. Callie Bianco netted three 3-pointers for the Mountaineers.
